01 — Google Ads

Where Google Ads budgets get wasted

Most wasted spend comes from default settings and missing tracking. These are the four problems we find most often when we audit a Google Ads account.

1. Broad match keywords without negative keywords

This is the Search terms report in Google Ads. It shows the real searches people typed before clicking your ad. Without negative keywords, many clicks come from searches like “plumber jobs” or “how to fix it myself”: people who will never hire you.

  • We read this report every week
  • Irrelevant searches become negative keywords
  • Your budget moves to searches that produce calls

free plumbing adviceIrrelevant: exclude Broad match 6 $17.95 0.00

Example account. Figures are illustrative. Rows in red would be added as negative keywords.

2. Ads showing in the wrong locations

Google’s default location setting shows ads to people who are only interested in your area, not people who are actually in it. A Toronto plumber pays for clicks from Winnipeg. It takes one setting to fix, but it is easy to miss because it sits under “Location options”.

Google Ads Campaign settings › Locations Example account
LocationsToronto, Ontario, Canada (city)
Location options › Include

With the default, someone in Winnipeg researching Toronto plumbers can click your ad. Local service businesses almost always want “Presence” only.

3. Inaccurate conversion tracking

This is the Conversions page in Google Ads. When page views, button taps or duplicate form imports are set as primary conversions, Google’s bidding learns to find more of them, not more customers.

  • Only real calls, forms and bookings set as primary
  • Each lead counted once
  • Numbers checked against your CRM
Google Ads Goals › Conversions Example account
+ New conversion actionAccount-default goals
Conversion actionOptimizationCount
Page view – /contactCounts visits, not leads Primary Every
Click – Call buttonCounts taps, even with no call Primary Every
Lead form (GA4 import)Same form counted twice Primary Every
Lead form (Google Ads tag)Correct Primary One

Example of a common broken setup. Red rows teach Google’s bidding to find clicks and page views instead of real leads.

4. Low-quality placements

New Search campaigns come with the Display Network switched on. Your ads then show inside mobile games and random websites, where accidental taps cost money and rarely turn into calls.

Google Ads Campaign settings › Networks Example account

02 — Facebook & Instagram ads

Where Facebook ad budgets get wasted

Facebook and Instagram can fill your calendar before customers ever search. These are the problems we fix most often in Meta Ads Manager.

1. Boosting posts instead of running lead campaigns

The Boost button on a post buys likes, comments and reach. A campaign in Ads Manager with the Leads objective tells Meta to find people who fill in your form or call.

  • Leads objective for every lead campaign
  • Separate retargeting for site visitors and video viewers
  • Results measured in leads, not likes
Create new campaignExample account

Choose a campaign objective

AwarenessShow ads to people most likely to remember them.
TrafficSend people to a destination, like your website.
EngagementGet more likes, comments and shares. This is what “Boost post” buys.
LeadsCollect leads for your business with forms, calls or messages.
App promotionFind new people to install your app.
SalesFind people likely to purchase your product or service.
CancelContinue

Boosted posts are paid for likes and reach. Lead campaigns are paid to find people who fill in your form or call.

2. Lead forms that are too easy to submit

A basic Instant Form is filled in by accident as often as on purpose. A higher-intent form with qualifying questions and a review step brings fewer, far better leads.

Example Instant Form. A “review” step and qualifying questions filter out accidental submissions.

3. Targeting that fights the algorithm

Stacking narrow interests shrinks the audience and raises costs. Meta now finds buyers from your creative and conversion data. We keep targeting broad inside your service area and let the ad do the work.

PlacementsAdvantage+ placements (Facebook, Instagram, Messenger)

4. Slow follow-up

Facebook leads cool off within minutes. We connect your lead forms to GoHighLevel, so every new lead gets an instant text, your team gets an alert, and the lead lands in your pipeline before they’ve closed the app.

  • Instant text reply to every new lead

Example workflow. The lead gets a text within seconds, and your team is alerted before the lead has closed Facebook.

5. Real photos and video ads

Stock photos look like ads, and people scroll past them. Short, phone-shot Reels of your crew at work and carousel ads of real finished jobs look like posts from a local business, and usually bring more leads for less.

  • 15–30 second Reels filmed on a phone
  • Carousels of real before-and-after jobs
  • Fresh creative every few weeks

04 — Google Ads vs. Facebook ads

Google Ads or Facebook ads: which is right for you?

Most businesses get the best results from both, planned together. Here’s how they differ.

One report for both

In Google Analytics, Google Ads shows up as Paid Search and Facebook and Instagram as Paid Social, measured on the same leads. We move budget each month to whichever produces cheaper booked jobs.

05 — Our process

How we manage your Google Ads and Facebook ads

One team runs both platforms with the same four steps, so budget always goes to whichever brings cheaper booked jobs.

  1. Audit & tracking

Google Ads conversions, the Meta Pixel and Conversions API, and call tracking, verified so both platforms learn from real leads.

  2. Build

Google campaigns by service and location. Facebook and Instagram campaigns by offer, with real photos, video and lead forms.

  3. Optimize weekly

Search terms, bids and ads on Google. Creative, audiences and lead quality on Facebook. Budgets moved between them.

  4. Scale

Once cost per lead is stable, we grow budgets, keywords, audiences and new markets on both.

What weekly management looks like

Both platforms log every edit. This is a normal week in one of our accounts. You can open either account at any time and see exactly what we changed.

How Much Does Google Ads Cost in Canada? (2026 Guide)

What Canadian businesses really pay for Google Ads: how cost per click is set, how to size a budget, and how agency management fees are structured.

  • Google Ads has no minimum spend. You set a daily budget and pay per click (or per lead for Local Services Ads).
  • Cost per click is set by a live auction and varies widely by industry and city. Check Google Keyword Planner for your own keywords.
  • A practical starting budget is enough to buy 50–100 clicks per campaign per month, so bidding has data to learn from.
