Google Business Profile vs. Google Ads: Do You Need Both?

What each one is

Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is your free listing on Google Search and Maps. It shows your name, reviews, photos, hours, phone number and service area.

Google Ads are paid ads that appear above and below search results and in Maps. You pay per click, or per lead for Local Services Ads.

How Google ranks local listings

Google says local results are based mainly on three factors:

  • Relevance: how well your profile matches the search. Choose accurate categories and describe your services clearly.
  • Distance: how far you are from the searcher or the location in their search.
  • Prominence: how well known your business is, including reviews, links and your wider web presence.

Distance is why a business can rank well near its address but poorly across town. Ads fill that gap by showing you in areas where your listing cannot rank.

Why ads work better with a strong profile

Before calling from an ad, many people check your reviews and photos. A profile with few reviews or no photos makes them keep looking, which wastes the click you paid for. Reviews also affect Local Services Ads ranking directly.

A quick profile checklist:

  1. Choose the most accurate primary category and relevant secondary categories.
  2. Set your service areas and hours correctly.
  3. Add real photos of your team, vehicles and finished work.
  4. Ask every happy customer for a review, and reply to reviews.
  5. Keep your name, address and phone number the same everywhere online.

When to prioritise which

  • New business: set up the profile immediately, and use ads to get leads while reviews build.
  • Established business with strong reviews: ads extend your reach to areas and services your listing does not cover.
  • Service-area business (no storefront): the profile helps near your base; ads and Local Services Ads cover the rest of your area.

Frequently asked questions

Is Google Business Profile free?

Yes. Creating and managing a Google Business Profile is free. Ads that appear in Maps are part of Google Ads and are paid.

Can I pay Google to rank higher in the map pack?

No. Organic map rankings cannot be bought. You can pay for ad placements in Maps and search results, which are labelled as sponsored.

Do reviews affect Google Ads?

Reviews strongly affect Local Services Ads ranking and influence whether people call after clicking any ad. They do not directly set Search ad costs.

Do I need a physical address for Google Business Profile?

You need a real business address for verification, but service-area businesses can hide their address and show a service area instead.
