Google Ads Landing Pages: What Makes a Page Convert (With Checklist)

Why the page matters as much as the ad

An ad earns the click. The landing page earns the lead. Sending paid traffic to a general home page usually lowers conversion rate, because visitors have to hunt for the service they searched. A dedicated page that matches the ad can turn more of the same clicks into calls, which lowers your cost per lead without raising your budget.

The five parts of a high-converting page

  1. Message match: the headline repeats the service and area from the search and the ad, for example "Emergency Plumber in Hamilton – Available 24/7".
  2. A clear next step: a click-to-call button and a short form visible without scrolling on mobile.
  3. Trust: Google rating and review count, licences and insurance, years in business, real team and job photos.
  4. Proof and detail: what is included, service areas, pricing guidance or "free estimate", and FAQs that answer objections.
  5. Speed: loads quickly on a phone connection, with compressed images and no heavy pop-ups.

Forms: shorter usually wins

For local services, a form with name, phone, postal code and a short "what do you need?" field usually performs well. Every extra field lowers completion, but a qualifying question such as postal code can improve lead quality. Always show the phone number next to the form, since many people prefer to call.

Include a short consent line so follow-up by text and email fits Canada's anti-spam law. See our CASL guide for ad leads.

Test one thing at a time

Change one element at a time, such as the headline, the offer or the form length, and give each version enough traffic to compare. In Quebec, remember that pages and forms must be available in French.

Frequently asked questions

Should Google Ads go to my home page?

Usually not. A dedicated page that matches the ad's service and location normally converts better than a general home page.

How many form fields should a landing page have?

For local services, 3 to 5 fields usually works well: name, phone, postal code and a short description of the job.

What is a good landing page conversion rate?

It varies widely by industry, offer and traffic quality. Measure your own baseline and aim to improve it, rather than comparing with general averages.

Does landing page speed affect Google Ads?

Yes. Slow pages lose visitors and can lower your landing page experience rating, which is part of Quality Score.
